If you’re happily employed in your dream career—congrats! And if in addition, you earn a steady paycheck and probably now skim over advice about resumes and interviews – congrats, once more!
But if on the contrary, you’re still afraid to venture into a career path you’ve always wanted, just know these fears are normal for anyone contemplating a major change. It’s not easy to take that leap, especially when fear and doubt creep in.
But here are a few first steps in getting over the fear hurdle and getting started on what you love.
Acknowledge your dream
No matter how lofty that career dream is, don’t dismiss it. You owe it to yourself to, at the very least, acknowledge it and think about how it might come to reality.
Write out your goal, and start outlining a rough road map of how you might get there. Do you need a business plan or some startup funding? Will you need more education and training, or is your experience enough for a start?
Just having a plan might help you begin framing the reality. Better yet, identify some people you know who have made it work for them, and seek their mentorship.
Confront doubt head on
When launching into something that you love, no matter how intimidating it may seem now, tell yourself you will make it to the top, and you can get there.
The first step is to dump the doubt by acknowledging that the opportunity for success is greater. Another option is to admit your fears, but move forward knowing that you are committed to making your dream happen anyway.
The key is to attack doubt with a positive mindset. Realise that it’s natural, and strategise for success, no matter what.
Silence the Skeptics
“You want to become a writer? Isn’t that just a nice hobby?” “That’s nice, but is that a real job like being a doctor, lawyer, or engineer?”
Often times, instead of being supportive, people are quick to point out the risks of venturing into your dream job, but never take them to heart.
Instead of letting it get to you, persist. Remember that there will always be skeptics, and you should not never let them deter you.
As you journey into a dream career path, you may sometimes find yourself dealing with surprising situations. And while you may get concerned about riskS, learn to stay in the present moment, and not worry about the past or future.
If you are caught in a loop of worry, you may not focus on what you need to reach your goal. Never let worry hold you back, and instead focus on what you need to do right now to achieve your dream.
Yes, following your dream will have challenges, you will make mistakes, and you might even fail the first time. But that’s fine. Some of the most successful people in the world have tried and failed several times before they made it.
Start with the smallest step to launch into your dream career. Do you need to start with a simple research? Would you need to apply for a grant or fellowship? Maybe it’s just getting some training and updating your CV?
Whatever that first step is, start and gather your momentum with determination. Like Nelson Mandela said: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.”
On that note, we challenge you to consider taking steps to finally launch your dream career.
Here’s to a very fulfilling 2017!
