We know. In those days, geeks were considered to be really weird and were usually the odd ones out in many gatherings. You just knew them when you saw them. They always appeared unfashionable or socially inept. So, many people (especially women) in a patriarchal society like ours hid the things they are passionate about out of fear of not fitting in, or being a part of the cool crowd.
But right now, being a geek isn’t a bad thing anymore. These days—especially in the startup world, it can get you far. Geeks like Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg are now immensely rich, famous, and most importantly, worshiped by everyone else for their innovations.
So, it’s time to embrace your inner geek. You have one!
Here are tips to let it out:
Show the world
You’re probably passionate about something, but you’ve been keeping low. Show the world you’re passionate about something by displaying it every chance you get.
This is one trick that would help you bring out that inner geek and grow at the same time. If you’re passionate about social media, writing, coding, photography, don’t keep t to yourself. Find avenue to keep doing working on those passion.
Find fellow geeks
The internet has made it possible for us to meet more people than we could have if we depended on just meeting people offline. Online communities are an excellent way to meet people who share your interests. You could use Nairaland and create a thread that says something like, “web designers, let’s meet here”.
You just might make some new friends, and you may even get to chat with your favourite footballer, author, singer, celebrity chef, or movie star.
A great way for geeks to express their deep interest for something is to create content — write about it! Start a blog, write about developments or an opinion piece or an analysis of your chosen geekdoms, and then discuss with the like-minded geeks.
If you love videos, go on and create videos about that interest of yours. In all you do, ensure you creating content, putting yourself out there and getting noticed for your passion.
Plan a trip
Following your passions is an excellent way (or excuse) to go somewhere you’ve never been. In fact, it might be the best reason of all.
For instance, if you’re a foodie, take a trip to Nigerian cities. Visit eateries and restaurants in the east, north, west or south. If possible, take a trip outside the country, see knew delicacies. If you’re a fashionista, go out and see new designs. Exploring and knowing what obtains outside would definitely make you a stand-out geek in your field.
